For years, Saudis used or better to say abused the holy cities of Mecca and Medina to advance their own agendas. Whether it was to justify their actions or give legitimacy to their throne, Hajj was politicized not to promote Islamic interests but to further individual arrangements.
In the recent years however, this monopoly of Hajj has come under deep scrutiny thanks to the growing use of social networking and the ease of communication around the world.
To make the matters worse for Saudi Arabia, World’s increasing use of such media to raise awareness about Saudis exploitation of holy cities hasn’t exactly worked in their favor. No matter how hard crown prince Mohammad bin Salman (MBS) tries to present an image of reformist of himself, people nowadays won’t just sit still and stay silent about the despicable crimes committed under the guise of progress.
Just a while back following the bombing of civilian areas by Saudi bombers, many prominent individuals around the world asked for the people to boycott Hajj pilgrimage, which could contribute hefty sums of money to Saudis cause used for the killing of innocent civilians in Yemen. It has been estimated that Saudi Arabia enjoys revenue of twelve billion dollars derived annually from the converging mass of pilgrims coming to Hajj each year.
Even Salafi muftis like Sadiq al Ghariani have asked Muslims to boycott the Hajj, although in their case it is mostly a hatred of not receiving a fair share not necessarily the crimes committed against innocent Yemenis.
Muhammed Saeed Noori chairman of Raza Academy India said that monopoly over Hajj has also addicted Saudis to the money such phenomenon brings to their tables. It is true that most of Saudis treasuries are filled with petrodollars gained from oil sales but the effect of Hajj is still undeniable.
Except that above-mentioned twelve billion dollar revenue, Saudis in recent years have begun investing in cities infrastructure to turn it into a modern world marvel. Millions have been spent, giants sky scrapers have been built to cast shadows over the House of God and to bring more money, estimated to reach somewhere around a hundred and fifty billion by the end of 2020, into their pockets and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Underneath theses so called “renovations” Saudis crush and destroy all monumental landmarks belonging to Sunnis, who are oblivious to what is happening before their eyes.
Professor Ibrahima faye a famous scholar of Senegal said that Recent reports of Jordanian obstruction of Palestinians who applied for pilgrimage is not such a far-fetched thought, given the deplorable conditions they live in. Actions puppeteer such as this are like another straw on camel’s back to break its will and force them into accepting the so-called “deal of the century”.
