Banned Pilgrims and Worshipers Perform Tawaf Around a symbolized Figure of the Kaaba in Brussels

BRUSSELS – The Tnternational Commission to Watch Saudi Administration of Muslim Places’’ Al Haramain Watch’’  sponsored today an awareness-raising project to expose the politicization of holy places by the Saudi government through the tawaaf performace of a symbolic figure of the Kaaba in the Belgian capital Brussels.

Dozens of Arabs and Muslims living in Europe gathered in front of the European Commission headquarters in Brussels dressed in Ihram and circled around the symbolic figure of the Kaaba in an expression of Saudi rejection of the holy places. The participants in the awareness activity included a number of Arab nationalities, most notably Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Syria, Egypt, Sudan, Mauritania and Libya.

These are a group of pilgrims who have been denied visas by Saudi authorities to perform Hajj and Umrah rituals for reasons believed to be political and considered arbitrary and illegal by human rights organizations. The event also included Muslim participants from Pakistani, Turkish and French  nationalities who are also victims of Saudi Arabia, where they were refused visas.

A Syrian elder said he still hoped to be able to perform Hajj in the Hijaz. He had tried to register on five occasions before but was rejected at a time without explaining the reasons. A Libyan human rights activist said he was being denied sacred rituals for reasons he believed were reprisals from the Saudi authorities for his activity on social networking sites and his criticism of Riyadh’s local and regional policies.

The human rights activist stressed that the Saudi authorities’ ban on any Muslim performing Hajj or Umrah is a flagrant violation of the right to worship guaranteed by international law, a disgrace in Riyadh’s administration of the two holy mosques. For its part, The Tnternational Commission to Watch Saudi Administration of Muslim Places’’ Al Haramain Watch’’  said that Saudi Arabia is being radicalized by refusing to grant thousands of Arabs and Muslims Hajj and Umrah visas for political, ethnic, and sectarian reasons, which erodes Muslim unity and diverts Mecca of its spiritual and religious content by turning it into a card for political greeds.

Al Haramain Watch called on the United Nations Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion and belief and all international human rights organizations to intervene urgently to pressure the Saudi authorities to stop their arbitrary measures and prevent any Muslim from performing religious rites as a guaranteed legal and human right.

Al Haramain Watch aims to ensure that Saudi Arabia manages the two holy mosques and Islamic sites in a proper manner that preserves the past and the present image of Islam. The commission will apply this aim by advising Riyadh through an Islamic advisory board, engaging Muslim countries in managing the holy rituals, and stopping the obliteration of Islamic identity in Mecca and Medina, which is carried out by Saudi Arabia through the unlimited urban expansion that destroyed many of these sites and eliminated the Islamic presence in them.  The commission will also prevent the Saudi Arabia singling out the decision over the holy rituals, which may affect the safety of pilgrims and Umrah.  It also aims to prevent the unconvincing closure of rituals such as visiting dignitaries or celebrities or guests of Saudi Arabia. In addition, it will monitor any violation of Saudi Arabia to any pilgrim during his visit to the holy sites. Finally, it will ensure a fair distribution of Hajj and Umrah quotas on Muslim countries without any favouritism or mediation.

The International Commission to Watch Saudi Administration of Muslim places “Al Haramain Watch” is a global organization that monitors the ways and means of Saudi Arabia’s administration of the holy sites in Mecca and Medina, especially the Haramain, including the Islamic historical sites in the Kingdom. The Commission’s work is based on an Islamic reference, and is keen on the interests of Muslims from the ocean to the Gulf and all areas of Islamic presence.
